November in the Delaware Valley: First Frosts, Early Dusk and Leaf Weather (Philadelphia Liberty News)

November settles the Delaware Valley into late autumn. Cooler air becomes the rule in Philadelphia, nights lengthen quickly after the return to standard time, and the last of the fall color fades in Fairmount Park, the Wissahickon and neighborhood streets from Chestnut Hill to the Northeast.

The Delaware River moderates the city's temperatures slightly compared with inland Pennsylvania, but it does not cancel winter's approach. November is the month to expect the season's first widespread frosts, to protect tender plants, and to bring hoses and outdoor plumbing into winter order in South and West Philadelphia rowhomes.

Homes deserve a seasonal pass: test heating before the coldest nights arrive, clear leaves from drains and areaways so autumn rain has somewhere to go, check window and door seals in older housing stock, and keep flashlights and batteries ready for the wind-driven outages that nor'easter season can bring later.

Drivers and riders should adjust to early darkness. The evening commute on I-76 and the Broad Street Line now happens after sunset, wet leaves slick side streets in Manayunk and Fishtown, and deer are active at dawn and dusk near the city's park edges and suburban borders.

None of this depends on a single forecast — it is Philadelphia's normal November pattern. Residents who use the month to prepare homes, cars and routines meet December on their own terms, with the leaves raked and the storm windows of the season metaphorically closed.

Leaf collection and street sweeping schedules matter more than they sound: leaves piled in streets clog the inlets that carry autumn rain to the Delaware and Schuylkill. Following your block's posted schedule is a small, real piece of flood prevention.
